âGram! Grandpa!â Rae yells as she jumps out of the car. Sarah is right behind her as they run over to their grandparents and maul them with hugs.
Aaron and I climb out and watch our girls for a moment.
Whoa. Our girls? What is my brain doing? We might be dating, but Sarah and I arenât together. Even if, in my heart, she is my girl, no matter what.
Fuck, Iâm pathetic.
âWell, well, Aaron Cooper and Joel Wilkinson. Get over here,â Pete says.
Leaving the bags in the trunk, we make our way over to Pete and Bea, shaking hands with Pete and hugging Bea.
âAbout time we officially indoctrinated you into our clan,â Pete says with a wily smile.
âOh boy, starting trouble already?â Bea asks.
Pete winks at her, then kisses her cheek. I stifle a laugh when she looks up at him the exact same way Rae looks at Aaron.
âI just want them to know weâre happy to have them,â Pete says, a troublemaking look in his eyes.
âHow about we show them the house, then?â Bea says, ever the voice of reason.
âGrab those bags, boys, and weâll show you around.â
Aaron and I grab the bags from the trunk and follow them inside.
âThis here is what we call the small house,â Pete says. âFour bedrooms and two bathrooms. Thereâs a little trail through the woods that leads up to the big house. That one belongs to Chris, our oldest. He owns all of this property, and we had this house built as overflow for when the whole family is visiting. On the other side of the property is Chrisâs younger brotherâs houseâthatâs Darren. Heâs the youngest boy, just two years older than Kara. Our second oldest, Sylvia, and her family always stay with Chris, while the two of us, Kara and Charlie, and the girls stay here, though youâll find most meals and down time are spent at Chrisâs house. Itâs an open-door policy around here. Except the bedrooms.â Pete winks at us.
For a âsmallâ house, this one is spacious enough. Thereâs a medium-sized kitchen open to the living area, a small dining room, a bathroom, and a large bedroomâwhere Pete and Bea sleepâon the first floor. They lead us upstairs, pointing out which bedroom will be Kara and Charlieâs when they get here tomorrow. Next is Aaron and Raeâs room. Aaron drops the bags and they head inside to âget settled.â Sure.
Finally, we end up at a cozy bedroom, and for the first time, I realize weâll be sharing a bedroom and a bed.
Seeing the look on my face and clearly reading my mind, Pete chuckles and slaps my shoulder.
âWhatever you two are doing or not doing, donât insult my intelligence by pretending you donât share a bed.â
âPeter Abbott,â Bea hisses.
He chuckles and kisses her cheek. âWeâll be downstairs if you need us. Take your time!â he calls as they walk away.
Sarah laughs and leads the way into the room. Itâs small, but has two closets, a dresser, and a TV, along with a queen-sized bed.
