“Gram! Grandpa!” Rae yells as she jumps out of the car. Sarah is right behind her as they run over to their grandparents and maul them with hugs.

Aaron and I climb out and watch our girls for a moment.

Whoa. Our girls? What is my brain doing? We might be dating, but Sarah and I aren’t together. Even if, in my heart, she is my girl, no matter what.

Fuck, I’m pathetic.

“Well, well, Aaron Cooper and Joel Wilkinson. Get over here,” Pete says.

Leaving the bags in the trunk, we make our way over to Pete and Bea, shaking hands with Pete and hugging Bea.

“About time we officially indoctrinated you into our clan,” Pete says with a wily smile.

“Oh boy, starting trouble already?” Bea asks.

Pete winks at her, then kisses her cheek. I stifle a laugh when she looks up at him the exact same way Rae looks at Aaron.

“I just want them to know we’re happy to have them,” Pete says, a troublemaking look in his eyes.

“How about we show them the house, then?” Bea says, ever the voice of reason.

“Grab those bags, boys, and we’ll show you around.”

Aaron and I grab the bags from the trunk and follow them inside.

“This here is what we call the small house,” Pete says. “Four bedrooms and two bathrooms. There’s a little trail through the woods that leads up to the big house. That one belongs to Chris, our oldest. He owns all of this property, and we had this house built as overflow for when the whole family is visiting. On the other side of the property is Chris’s younger brother’s house—that’s Darren. He’s the youngest boy, just two years older than Kara. Our second oldest, Sylvia, and her family always stay with Chris, while the two of us, Kara and Charlie, and the girls stay here, though you’ll find most meals and down time are spent at Chris’s house. It’s an open-door policy around here. Except the bedrooms.” Pete winks at us.

For a “small” house, this one is spacious enough. There’s a medium-sized kitchen open to the living area, a small dining room, a bathroom, and a large bedroom—where Pete and Bea sleep—on the first floor. They lead us upstairs, pointing out which bedroom will be Kara and Charlie’s when they get here tomorrow. Next is Aaron and Rae’s room. Aaron drops the bags and they head inside to “get settled.” Sure.

Finally, we end up at a cozy bedroom, and for the first time, I realize we’ll be sharing a bedroom and a bed.

Seeing the look on my face and clearly reading my mind, Pete chuckles and slaps my shoulder.

“Whatever you two are doing or not doing, don’t insult my intelligence by pretending you don’t share a bed.”

“Peter Abbott,” Bea hisses.

He chuckles and kisses her cheek. “We’ll be downstairs if you need us. Take your time!” he calls as they walk away.

Sarah laughs and leads the way into the room. It’s small, but has two closets, a dresser, and a TV, along with a queen-sized bed.
